Engagement Photo Guide

At least one of you probably feels very uncertain about engagement photos. You’ve never done this before, and it feels super awkward. That’s ok, I have done this and I will get you through it, and make you look good in the process. The engagement photo shoot usually takes less than an hour, and it’s just us walking around a park talking about the two of you, and your wedding plans. I will ask you to stand here, look at each other, look at me, sit there, tell me a joke, and I will tell you a little about myself too. The most important part is that we learn to relax around each other, and work together. The goal of this photo shoot is three to five great shots of you as a couple.

Location

We have a lot of choices for where to do your engagement photos. Loudoun county has a lot of great parks, vinyards, and wedding venues we can go to. DC and fairfax are full of great locations too. Your favorite restaurant may be open to a photo shoot. Your wedding or reception venue will provide a good preview of the big day. There are some studio locations we can use if we want to go more formal.

Posing

I think people get very anxious about how to pose for engagement photos. Relax, this will be easy and fun. There isn’t a wrong way to do this. I am not going to put you in bunch of junior prom poses. We are just going to spend some time together, talking, and I will give you some basic guidance on how to do things you already do, in a way that looks right on camera.

What Do We Wear?

These photos are all about you. We want these photos to represent who you are as a couple. Ideally you dress nicely, but not too fancy. You don’t need to go buy new clothes for this photo shoot, and if you aren’t comfortable wearing heels or a tie, then don’t wear those things. If we are going into the woods for this shoot, please wear shoes that can handle the terrain.

I would suggest you look at your outfits next to each other with an eye for colors or patterns that clash, or that match too closely.

Weather can be a concern. I love fall photo shoots, but we won’t get good pictures if you are freezing cold, or if you are all bundled up. We can re-schedule if need be.

Things to avoid:

  • Dark sunglasses

  • Ball caps

  • Any clothing with text
